Minimalist Vocabulary Learning – Learn What You Need, Cut Out the Excess!

Resources are never enough. Everyone only has 24 hours a day, no more, no less. Money is limited, it can't be wasted endlessly. Human knowledge is infinite, it's impossible to learn everything on your own.

Therefore, instead of trying to cram everything in, I choose to streamline and learn strategically. This approach not only helped me achieve IELTS 8.0, but also allows me to manage my Minimal English class, pursue a Master's in MATESOL, and raise two children (12 & 18 years old) – all at the same time without feeling overwhelmed.

Minimalist Vocabulary Learning – Learn What You Need, Cut Out the Excess!

🔹Categorize vocabulary for more effective learning

1️⃣ Vocabulary to USE – Learn in depth and apply immediately:

✔️ General vocabulary – Common words in daily life and communication. ✔️ Topic vocabulary – Subject-specific words, for IELTS, TOEFL, work. ✔️ Collocations – Phrases that help express naturally (make a decision instead of do a decision).

2️⃣ Vocabulary to KNOW – Only need to recognize, no need to memorize:

⚪ Jargon – Specialized terms, only needed if you work in that field

⚪ Slang, idioms, proverbs – You'll understand by listening a lot, not necessarily to use

⚪ Phrasal verbs – Only learn common phrases, no need to cram everything.

🔹Minimalist & effective vocabulary learning method:

👉 Step 1: When encountering a new word, ask yourself: "Do I really need to use this word?

👉 Step 2: If needed, make sentences with it, use it immediately in practice. If not, understanding the meaning is enough

👉 Step 3: Use AI to categorize words faster – input words into AI, ask about usage and frequency to know which words to learn in depth, which only need recognition.

“Classify the vocabulary in the lesson according to the following criteria: ✅ Vocabulary to USE (need to learn, easy to apply: general vocabulary, topic vocabulary, collocation) & 🚫 Vocabulary to KNOW (not necessarily to memorize: slang, idiom, proverb, phrasal verbs).”

Choices are more important than effort.

I used to think learning vocabulary was a numbers game. But after applying this method, I realized:

✅ It's better to learn a few but use them immediately, than to know many superficially

✅ No need to rush, just be consistent.
