In my previous post, I shared the mindset of minimalist vocabulary learning, focusing on selection rather than cramming, to maximize limited resources. Today, I'm diving deeper into a crucial aspect – vocabulary selection in IELTS Reading.

One of the biggest challenges in IELTS Reading is encountering long passages filled with difficult jargon, overwhelming learners. The issue isn't a lack of vocabulary, but knowing which words are essential to learn for use and which are only needed for comprehension.

💡Solution? Combine minimalist thinking & AI! Instead of "grinding" all new words, learn selectively:
🔹 Vocabulary to USE: General Vocabulary, Topic Vocabulary, Collocations.
🔹 Vocabulary to KNOW: Jargon, Slang, Idioms, Proverbs, Phrasal Verbs.

📌 Practice with a passage from Cambridge 17

"The Secret of Persuasion" in Cambridge IELTS 17 is a prime example. Here's an excerpt:

📖 Original Paragraph:
"A recent psychological study revealed that the phrasing of a request can significantly impact compliance rates. The research found that when individuals are exposed to a concept known as ‘reciprocity principle’, they are more likely to agree to a request. This principle is rooted in social norms, where individuals feel obligated to return favors. Furthermore, the ‘foot-in-the-door’ technique, a persuasive strategy, involves making a small initial request before escalating to a larger one, thereby increasing compliance."

📌 Vocabulary Categorization with AI & Minimalist

✅ Vocabulary to USE (essential to learn, easy to apply):

- General Vocabulary: request, research, agree, compliance.

- Topic Vocabulary: reciprocity principle, social norms, persuasive strategy.

- Collocations: increase compliance, make a request, return favors.
→ These words are easy to use in IELTS Writing & Speaking due to their high applicability!

🚫 Vocabulary to KNOW (not necessarily to memorize):

- Jargon: foot-in-the-door technique, phrasing.

- Idioms & Phrasal verbs: escalate to a larger one.
→ These words aid in faster reading comprehension, but don't need to be memorized for Speaking or Writing.

🔍How AI Optimizes Vocabulary Learning

1️⃣ Step 1: Copy the text into AI, ask it to highlight important vocabulary

2️⃣ Step 2: Ask AI to categorize which words to learn for use and which are for reading comprehension only

3️⃣ Step 3: Learn words in groups, focusing on Vocabulary to USE and skipping Vocabulary to KNOW.

🌟 Key Takeaways:
✅ Minimalist English Learning – No scattered learning, just focus on the essentials.
✅ Apply AI to save time – Filter words faster, learn more efficiently.
✅ Simpler learning, better result! – Don't try to memorize everything, just what's necessary!
