Tuấn Bảo – 7.0 IELTS: two skills at 6.0 and still there, because the other two were solid

A student who made no noise

Tuấn Bảo is a grade 11 student at Vinschool who stayed with the class for a long stretch. He is quiet, not the type to seek attention.

But he knew exactly what he wanted. He started IELTS early and moved step by step, steadily. In class he was always on time, completed every task, and never complained.

His score profile was uneven — and that is the point

  • Listening: 7.5
  • Reading: 8.5
  • Writing: 6.0
  • Speaking: 6.0
  • Overall: 7.0

Tuấn Bảo with his classmates at MEA

Listening and Reading were his strengths, built on sharp focus and fast analysis. Writing and Speaking sat at 6.0 — not flashy, but steady and composed.

Many students see a profile like that and conclude they are not ready to sit the test. The reverse is true: an overall 7.0 does not require four skills at 7.0.

What Bảo got right was keeping his two weaker skills above the level that would drag the average down, while pushing his two strong skills as high as they would go. That was a clear-headed choice, not luck.

After the test

Bảo was accepted into the school he wanted and is now studying abroad.

One small thing you can try today

Pull out your most recent mock results. Instead of spreading your time evenly across all four skills, try reallocating: keep the weak skill at a level that does not drag the total down, and put most of your effort into the skill you are already good at.

Moving a skill from 8.0 to 8.5 is usually far cheaper than moving one from 5.5 to 6.5. And the overall score does not care where the points came from.
