Have you ever asked a friend out for coffee, but they didn't reply to your message all day, only to text back in the evening, 'I'm busy, thanks'?

👉 They didn't directly say they didn't want to go, but you can infer they don't really want to associate with you anymore. This is inference – information not directly stated but can be deduced from the expression.

In IELTS Reading, the author also uses the 'read between the lines' writing style, meaning they speak indirectly, not stating everything explicitly, forcing the reader to infer.

Today, I'll guide you on how to identify the author's inference in IELTS Reading, using a real example from Cambridge IELTS 17

📌 Example: Reading passage 'The Benefits of Being Bilingual' – Cambridge IELTS 17

📖 Original paragraph with inference:
"For many years, it was assumed that being bilingual was a drawback, rather than an advantage, for children. Researchers believed that using two languages caused confusion and slowed down a child’s cognitive development. However, recent studies suggest that bilingual children actually demonstrate greater cognitive flexibility and problem-solving skills compared to their monolingual peers. This is because switching between languages strengthens their ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously."

😵 The problem:

The author does NOT state their opinion directly.
You must infer from how the author presents the information.

📌 How to identify inference in the paragraph

💡 Step 1: Look at how the author presents the information

First sentence: 'For many years, it was assumed that being bilingual was a drawback...'
👉 The author uses the passive voice to indicate that this view is not their own but a common view in the past.
Second sentence: 'Researchers believed that using two languages caused confusion...'
👉 No personal evaluation by the author, only presenting others' views.
Third sentence: "However, recent studies suggest that bilingual children actually demonstrate greater cognitive flexibility..."
👉 This is a signal that the author implicitly refutes the old view.

📌 Author's inference:
👉 The author does NOT directly say 'bilingualism is good,' but through the way they lead the discussion, they implicitly show that they agree with the new research supporting bilingual learning.

🚀 If there's a question like 'What is the author’s opinion on bilingualism?', you should choose the answer indicating the author tends to agree with the benefits of bilingualism.

📌 Tips to identify inference faster in IELTS Reading

✅ Find transition words (However, Yet, Although, While…):

If the author presents two opposing views, the second view usually expresses the author's true opinion.

✅ Pay attention to the author's tone:

If a view is expressed in the passive voice ('it was assumed'), the author may disagree with it.

✅ Use AI to help find inference faster:

Copy the paragraph into AI and ask:
👉 'What is the author implying in this paragraph?'
👉 'Does the author agree or disagree with this idea?'

📌Example of AI analysis:
"The author presents the old belief that bilingualism is harmful, but then introduces new research that contradicts it. This suggests that the author supports the idea that bilingualism is beneficial."

🚀 Benefits?

Speeds up reading comprehension, easily grasps the author's opinion without thinking too lon
Improves ability to answer 'What can be inferred from the passage?' questions.
